With rhythmic accompaniment and energetic melodic lines, this animated work contains elements of early American barn dances, then features a calmer section that develops into a moderate jig. After these lighter textures, the frenzied dance theme returns as the piece races to an exciting conclusion. The opening melody is a derivative of an old Irish fiddle tune with many names, including Listowel Hornpipe.
